Birth Order Research Essay
No Longer a Middle Child
Many times I’ve wondered, what if I never knew I had many things in common with a first born child? Recently we did a research of character traits a first, middle, and last child has. In my case I got to be a first born child. As the research went on, I realized I have many things in common with a first born but some differences as well. The character traits include an achiever, someone reliable, and taking a career in the medical fields. Some differences are to be serious and close-minded, which are most certainly not me. This leads me to explaining all my character traits as well as the differences.
The first two character traits that define me are being an achiever and being reliable. Beings an achiever defines me because as a person I set goals that I hope to meet and achieve them. For example, last year last year for my biology class I set a goal for myself to pass the class with an A just by studying hard and reading my notes everyday. In the end I achieved my goal with an A just like I wanted to. The second word that applies to me is being reliable. I consider myself a reliable person because I’m always there for the people I love. For example, my mom relies on me to push my brother to do his homework before he goes out to play because she knows I’m a positive influence on him which makes him want to finish his homework. That concludes the first two character traits that symbolize me and my life.
The last thing I found in common with the research is the interest of going into the medical fields in the future. This trait defines me because since I was little I have always wanted to become a doctor and pursue my goal. The profession I want to take is a pediatrician. The reason why this is my dream job is because I love kids and I get along with every age group, therefore I feel like I’d do a great job. This trait is one of the most valuable traits I found on the research because I would of never thought a first born would have a medical interest. This leads me to other shocking things I found on the research that were different on my personality.
The second set of traits, however, don’t apply to me. They are being serious and close minded. Being serious, in my opinion is not enjoying life. The reason why this word doesn’t define me is because I love to have fun and make people smile. For example, anytime one of my friends is feeling sad I try to make them happy by saying a joke. However, I do know when to stop. If I know that I’m not being serious enough about a topic while I’m talking it may seem as if I’m being rude, which I try to avoid. The second word, as well as the first, does not define me because I am not a close-minded person. The reason why this isn’t one of my traits is because I like to hear other peoples thoughts so I can learn from them. For example, in group activities I let others speak and share their ideas so in the end everyone can come together and make conclusions about whatever activity we were doing.
In conclusion, those are the 3 traits I found in common and the 2 traits I thought did not apply to me. I thought that this research was very interesting because I never knew I would have things in common with firstborns, as well as differences. This changed my views in many ways because some of the traits listed on the research shocked me in the sense of how people act and who they are. I think it made me think more about the different type of people out there and how not everything is as it seems.

Reflections On Week 1
- Some factors that I think may affect me in the participation in class are the stress of homework for other classes, pushing off assignments, having enough time, and not getting enough rest. The reason why I think homework from my other classes might affect my participation/experience in the class is because I am in Avid and I am expected to give my 100% in all that I do, and sometimes it's just very hard to keep up with everything. Another reason why I might be affected is by pushing off assignments. This is one of the habits I am always forcing myself to stop doing and I believe I'm closer than I was yesterday. In addition, one of the things I stress over at times is having enough time for everything. This is one of my main concerns everyday because I feel like I won't get much done, but at the end of the day homework is all finished around 10:20 p.m. (FYI: I start homework at 6). At last, I'm afraid I wont be able to participate in class so much because of being too tired. I always try to get enough rest but sometimes it just doesn't work, that's also something I am trying to work on (oh another FYI: I sleep right after I'm done with homework so I end up sleeping around 10:50 and waking up at 5:15).
- One awesome experience that I've learned in which has changed me is when I learned about the program that is called Avid. Avid is a program that prepares students for college and have great chances into getting into their desired choices of colleges/universities. This has honestly changed me in so many ways because without Avid, I would probably not even be in this class. Avid has given me so many opportunities that I didn't know I could achieve. This program has made me realized that I shouldn't take my education for granted because there may be other schools out there that don't have this program which could help students tremendously in may ways. I plan on continuing with this program. I already completed 3 years so why not through out the rest of my high school career.
- What I'm most excited about this class is getting to meet new people and having fun learning. I'm excited to meet new people because I love interacting with others and just getting to know them and getting to know you much more Bo$$tini. On the other hand, one of the things I'm the most concerned about is test taking. I'm horrible at test taking and I think the reason why I don't get the grades I want on the tests are because I tend to get very nervous and just over-think things. This is another habit I struggle with but I always hope for the best and try to overcome it. I look forward to learning how to learn new techniques on how to write essays and just long papers in general. I like to write so that's why I look forward to it. This will make a practical difference in my life because writing is a big part of education, therefore one should be really good at it and excel (in my opinion).

The 6 words I used for my six word memoir are: stay true, have fun, stay positive. The reason behind this really defines who I am in many ways. Stay true for me means to always be yourself. In my eyes, I believe everyone should be happy with who they are and most importantly to love themselves. One should stay true because acting like someone else is never going to get anyone anywhere. If you are yourself you can achieve anything you want. To have fun is to live life to the fullest because we're only going to be young for such a period of time. We should treat our days like it is our last day living because honestly no one knows when it's our last day so why spend it being grouchy and miserable when you can be out having fun with your friends? The last two words are to stay positive. Staying positive truly defines who I am because even though there is so much to complain about, there's many more things to be happy or proud about. Being positive to me is achieving happiness and being full of great confidence. I believe that my confidence comes from my positiveness in things and staying true to myself, which is why they are part of my six word memoir. I always say, "confidence is key."
